Local Artist returns to painting after a break of 10 years

Local Lymington Chef, Adrian Waterton is a living miracle. After a severe motorbike accident in 1998, which he surprisingly survived, surgeons told him he would never use his right hand again. The accident was life changing in many ways. He originally trained in Hotel Management and was a chef at the time of the accident. After months of pain management and with no profession or job he could return to, he took up a retraining course at a disabled college where he learned web design. Little did he know that he would uncover a creative talent that he didn’t even know he possessed.

Adrian, aged 44, jokes today that he received a blood transfusion from an artist.

He says: “I never knew how to paint before. I’d never even picked up a pencil to draw and it had never occurred to me that this might be something that I would be good at or even enjoy.”

His work combines the fine lines of graphic design and architectural drawings blended with a surreal visual experience that takes you on a journey across a linear landscape that has both depth and form, challenging your sense of perspective and belief.

Bizarrely, after an intense period of creativity during which Adrian produced some 13 pieces as well as Christmas cards, the creative urge seemed to have left him for almost ten years; that is until last week when he was inspired to do his new piece “Landmarks” .

The picture incorporates famous landmarks from across the world and positions them tangentially with finite precision. India, Dubai and more locally Salisbury feature in a clever wrap of time and travel. The viewer is drawn to look further and further into the fine detail.

Adrian says “I love to look into pictures, you never know what you will find in them and everyone will experience a picture differently.  It relaxes me, makes me happy and makes people smile. That's what art should do.” That’s what Adrian invites you to do.
